White Paper: Are Voice VLANs still relevant for Unified Communications Security?
Summary
Enterprises have often used separate voice VLANs for carrying IP voice traffic, with one of the underlying drivers being security. However, a variety of sniffing and VLAN hopping tools have now compromised any security advantages of VLANs. Customers with VLAN-based IP telephony solutions that require "all or none" encryption, yet need to support legacy telephones that don't support encryption, incur severely compromised security by enabling eavesdropping or man-in-the-middle attacks.
End-to-end encryption on all media has emerged as a security prerequisite for all Voice over IP and Unified Communications solutions. By supporting end-to-end encryption out of the box,
Microsoft's Office Communication Server provides a strong foundation for a secure Unified Communications solution, regardless of the physical design of the underlying network transport.

White Paper: How to Design and Configure an Office
Communications Server 2007 R2 Dial Plan
Summary
For UC system architects or implementers who have previous
experience with PBXs, differences between the traditional PBX
approach to dial plans and that of Office Communications Server
(OCS) 2007 R2 Enterprise Voice (EV) can lead to design and
configuration mistakes that can create problems for users and
prevent optimal functionality. Understanding these differences is
vital to getting the most out of OCS Enterprise Voice.
This whitepaper is intended to complement Microsoft’s Enterprise
Voice documentation and goes deeper into the concepts and best
practices, and incorporates the author's experience and knowledge
accumulated from implementing OCS-based voice systems over the
past 2-1/2 years and from collaborating with other experts in the
Microsoft Unified Communications field. It is targeted at readers
who are already familiar with the Microsoft documentation and who
already have some understanding of OCS’s basic dial plan elements:
Location Profiles, Voice Policies, Phone Usages, Routes, Mediation
Servers, and media gateways.
